The Sept 16 ‘heartbreaker’ ?

Not surprisingly in Malaysiakini today, on the 17th of September there is this article titled – The Sept 16 ‘heartbreaker’. I would dare say that this article which was written by R K Anand captures the feeling of majority of Malaysians who demand for change.

The excitement in the air was so thick that one would have needed a chainsaw to cut through it all.

For weeks, it had been the talk of the town and when dawn finally arrived on that fateful day, the nation awoke to the possibility that things might never be the same again.

Throughout the day, the telephones buzzed incessantly with curious friends and relatives at the other end wanting to know if it would actually happen.

But then of course, we all know that this is not the case. Instead…

In the end, it was another (Zaid) Ibrahim that stole the limelight with his frank and hard-hitting comments about the prime minister and his cabinet.

So what had happened on the 16th of September?

Will this mean the end of the “political tsunami”?

Some how R K Anand painted a positive prediction:

Sept 16 might have turned out to be a dud but there is an important lesson for the embattled ruling coalition which could prove perilous if ignored.

The powers-that-be must not overlook the fact that the people were generally disappointed that there was no change of government.

It appears that Malaysians are craving for something different and are willing to experiment regardless of the risks involved.

So if it is not Anwar and his political coup, BN might just find the scales tipping over in the next general election if it is not careful.

In my opinion, we all should not put or rest too much hope on one person, in this case Anwar Ibrahim, for political change. If we want political change then all of us must demand for it no matter who is the leader (as in this case Pakatan Rakyat).

Of course, change may only occur if there is enough mass support for it.

Until that critical mass appears, then I suppose we have to be contented with the current situation.

But don’t forget, we all must work to ensure that we have the necessary instutions to make democracy work; because what many of us want is not really a change of government, but rather a Malaysia in which there is ample of democratic space.

Anwar Tidak Percaya Allah Boleh Berlaku Adil

Kita lihat Anwar bukan sahaja tidak percaya kepada Polis dan Pendakwaraya, beliau juga tidak percaya kepada Allah.

Beliau tidak percaya Allah boleh melakukan keadilan jika melakukan mubahalah atau bersumpah dengan nama Allah bahawa beliau tidak melakukan sebarang kegiatan meliwat terhadap saiful. Beliau juga tidak berani bermubahalah kerana tidak yakin Allah akan menyebelahinya. Jika benar beliau tidak membuat perkara terkutuk tersebut mengapa takut pengadilan Allah?

Malangnya ulama-ulama celaru dan penyokong Pas lebih percaya putar belit Anwar berbanding sumpah Najib dengan nama Allah secara terbuka bahawa beliau tidak mengenali Altantuya.

Inilah dikatakan pada akhir zaman setan-setan pun diangkat menjadi ulama.

This story is typical of the poison pen type of blogs which is proliferating throughout the internet. The aim of that blog is solely to badmouth Anwar Ibrahim in whatever way possible… In this instance the blog is trying to paint a picture that Anwar is going againts Islam.

And that includes MYKMU too…

As I said before, I am well aware of all these. But sometimes I feel like voicing out my anger against all these crap…

And this is what I would like to say to MYKMU.

Hey MYKMU, kamu ini setan!

Actually I want to say more… but perhaps that will be done in the future…

As said before, the story is trying to paint a picture that Anwar is going againts Islam. Now, not so long ago, I read somewhere in MYKMU about someone questioning the need to produce 4 witnesses to conclusively prove that Anwar Ibrahim has done the allged sodomy act…

Now, the need to produce 4 witnesses is stipulated in Islam… and to question this requirement is in reality questioning Islam.

Wow… so it is alright for MYKMU and their ilks in UMNO (and other groups and individuals that sympathise with UMNO) to question Islam…

Wow… this is hypocrisy…

Yes… Go to hell with MYKMU…!!!

Now, Anwar Ibrahin is not going against Islam, but he is definitely going against UMNO…

The Politics of Ethnicity, Race and Emotions in Malaysia

I read the Malaysiakini news Umno offered PAS to jointly rule S’gor …

What a surprise… what a surprise….

Malay Agenda, Malay Agenda, …that is the theme of the secret meeting between former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo and PAS leaders Abdul Khalid Samad, Nasharudin Mat Isa and the party’s Terengganu commissioner Mustafa Ali.

That meeting was held quite a long time ago (in relative terms of course) i.e. possibly on March 10 or 11. Apparently this meeting had the blessings of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

That piece of news should once and for all describe the state of things with regard to how well politicians serve public interests…

Indeed, one might say that in Malaysia there might be no such thing as a true public interest, especially when the ruling party UMNO keeps talking about Malay Agenda and Malay Rights and so on and so forth….

Now, last time I was beginning to discuss about politics and public service. That was in this post – Public Service and Politics (1).

As I said before, there are many reasons why people enter politics. One is to get rich and powerful. But yet there is another reason for participating in politics… and that is to provide public service….

The idea that politics is related to public service is related to the concept of economics. Students of elementary and intermediate economics are likely to be aware of the concept of economic system in which the production of goods and services is the primary objective. But much of the economic system that facilitates the production and transfer of goods and services are not based on market forces alone. Much of the institutions that builds up the economic system rests the assumption that there will be some selfless souls who will contribute to the betterment of the system without thinking apparent “rewards”. This is the essence of public service.

Within the field of economics, this idea is supported by the concept of market failure. Market failures happen when the market i.e. the interaction of buyers and sellers fail to produce the best outcome for society.

So far I am only talking about theory and even in this respect my scope is extremely limited. There are so many theories out there on the subject of society and social institutions and politics.

Now… perhaps we might to consider the state of the political situation in Malaysia. Do Malaysian politicians serve the public as they should be?

In particular how does the concept of “Agenda Melayu” fits into the concept of public service. Especially why only focus only on the Malays. Now, I find it strange that UMNO is championing itself as the defender of Malay Rights or Agenda Melayu. As was said before, UMNO has failed miserably in uplifting the socio-economic situation of the Malays. The proof is very clear for everybody to see – they failed to achieve their own objectives as stipulated by the New Economic policies. And yes, they even admitted that…

But why does UMNO still used the race card…even though if we look at it obkectively they failed miserably in this respect…

There has to be some kind of logic that is used here… a kind of logic that I may not understand… in which only they may understand….

Let me illustrate…

And this is illustrated by the recent Malaysiakini report on Saiful Bahari – Father: Saiful was used . Why the father made that statement in support of his son is not the question here. The question is why such event was highlighted as a media event i.e. the press release…

It could be that UMNO is using emotions to sway the public’s opinion… Could that be possible? Now, some may say why UMNO must be dragged into this situation? Well… in a country such as in Malaysia… nothing major happens without UMNO playing a role….

Indeed in Malaysia the situation can be described as a political monopoly as UMNO has virtually been the leading party in all elections even this one on March the 8th. The difference is that in this election, there is a possibility that UMNO may lose political monopoly.

And this brings us back to the main topic of this post. How do you expect politicians to perform public service if there is no real market for political positions? Of course, when Saiful Bahari’s lawyer made the press conference, one may see that this is a “family-affair” situation with a desperate father defending his son’s integrity. The problem with this press conference was that the “truth” is already been found and that Saiful’s father was merely stating it (albeit in emotional terms). That statement actually contradicts the dictum that the accused is innocent unless found guilty in a court of law. Yes, a court of law, not press conference. But yet the manner of the conference was held as if he truth is already known….

But whatever it is Malaysiakini report about the “secret” PAS-UMNO talks should make it clear about the truth….

The truth is that we must be wary of politicians saying that they serve the public interests…

Such is the sad state of affairs in Malaysia…

The Unacceptable Antics of the New Straits Times…

Perhaps what R. Sivarasa said in the Malaysiakini youtube channel should not be a surprise.

Sivarasa in ‘He was indeed stripped, measured’ @ Malaysiakini youtube exposed the lies and treachery in the New Straits Time concerning Anwar Ibrahim….

Perhaps I and others should not be surprised at the behavior of the New Straits Time (or any other mainstream media)…

But should we stay silent whilst the mainstream media over and over again spew lies and unthruths? Should we stay silent whilst New Straits Time arrogantly tell the whole world (as that paper and the news item was also online) something that is blatantly one sided?

The answer is no. At least for me, I will not stay silent although I know that whatever the New Straits Time print is not true. Now, I say this as the New Straits Time, like the other mainstream media has the habit of mixing lies and untruths together with the truth… I consider this unacceptable and therefore I have taken an opinion that whatever is said by New Straits Time is not true, unless other media or sources confirm it (the items as said by New Straits Times) to be the truth…

But sometimes and especially now, the lies are too much. It is as if New Straits Time assume that the public is so gullible that they accept whatever is printed in that paper is the truth.

And the worst is that the New Straits Time like to think that people are so stupid. I mean just read Syed Albar’s statement: If he is searching for the truth he can get it very easily. Just give a blood sample for DNA tests..

Hey what is this… doesn’t he know that DNA sampling is a corroborative evidence. Such a statement..from a minister… and then being printed in the New Straits Time… what do these people think of us…. ? Do they think that we are stupid???

Yea… so New Straits Times is also thinking that the people are still stupid… yeas.. rakyat masih bodoh.. yes?

So I am telling to the people in New Straits Time, you all can go to hell!

‘What is Anwar afraid of?’

KUALA LUMPUR: If truth is what he is after, then Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should just give a blood sample for DNA tests, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar.

Syed Hamid was commenting on Anwar’s refusal to give a blood sample when he was taken to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital on Wednesday night.

The de facto Parti Keadilan Rakyat leader had said that he had no faith in the system as DNA evidence obtained by police in his sodomy case 10 years ago was allegedly fabricated.

Syed Hamid, however, countered that the government had not ruled out the possibility of getting foreign medical experts to conduct the DNA tests.

“What is he afraid of? He can even have his own doctor present when the tests are carried out,” he said.
“Under our laws, we cannot force a person to give a blood sample.

“The consent of the person is needed and since Anwar does not want to cooperate, he was taken back to the police lock-up.”

In Penang, Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said Anwar should have cooperated and undergone a DNA test.

He said it was normal for the police to seek DNA tests from suspects involved in rape and sodomy cases.

“As a responsible citizen, Anwar should have cooperated with the police.

“Nobody is above the law.”

Liow said this after accompanying Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas on a visit to the Sungai Bakap Hospital.

Syed Hamid also said Anwar had gone in search of the truth to the Federal Territories Islamic Affairs Department on July 10, accusing his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, of committing qazaf or false accusation of fornication.

“If he is searching for the truth, he can get it very easily. Just give a blood sample for DNA tests,” Syed Hamid said.

On the alleged high-handedness by the police in arresting Anwar on Wednesday afternoon, Syed Hamid stressed that they had acted in accordance with the law.

Anwar had given his assurance that he would turn up at the city police headquarters at 2pm on Wednesday, but police moved in an hour earlier and nabbed the former deputy prime minister near his home in Segambut.

The manner in which police effected the arrest had sparked an outcry among his supporters.

Syed Hamid, however, said police did nothing wrong as they had a warrant of arrest issued against Anwar.

He also said that police had reasonable grounds to believe that Anwar was not going to keep his word on meeting the police at 2pm.

After being questioned by the Anti-Corruption Agency in Putrajaya in the morning, Anwar was supposed to go directly to the city police headquarters.

“But his convoy headed for his home in Segambut.

“In fact, Anwar excused himself from the ACA by telling them he had an appointment with the police.

“If he went back to his house, there would have been problems. He has so many bodyguards and if police forced themselves in, there will be an incident again and we (the government) will be blamed again.

“So how do you avoid being involved in a scuffle as he was followed by seven cars? He was very well protected.”

Syed Hamid also said that the last time (on Sunday) police went to serve Anwar a notice to be present for questioning, the police were not allowed to enter his house.

“When we left the notice with his security guards, his lawyers used the technical excuse that the notice must be served personally to him.

“By doing what police did, police avoided any untoward incident and Anwar cooperated very well and we are satisfied with that.”

He said he was not personally informed by police of the operation to arrest Anwar, adding that the public should understand that it was a police operation.

“The police do not have to consult or seek permission on what needs to be done as they are empowered by law. I expect them to act within the law.”

Syed Hamid said police treated Anwar well and gave in to his many requests while he was detained.

“He wanted to pray, we gave him all the prayer time he wanted.

“His wife (Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail) wanted to give him medicine, the police allowed her to do so.

“His lawyers were also present when police recorded his statement and when he was taken to the hospital.”

Syed Hamid said Anwar was being investigated for a criminal case and should be given a fair chance to state his case.

By the same reason, he said Mohd Saiful, who lodged the sodomy report against Anwar three weeks ago, should be satisfied that his complaint was being investigated.

Unfortunately, Syed Hamid said, instead of upholding the truth, Anwar had turned the report against him into a politically-motivated incident.

Anwar was released on police bail at 9.45am yesterday after spending the night at the city police headquarters. He will have to present himself to police again on Aug 18.

As was said before, DNA sampling is a corroborative evidence. And strangely the New Straits Time quoted the minister saying that under Malaysian laws, one cannot be forced to give blood sample… Take this legal standing of DNA sampling and the minister’s earlier statement… something does not sound right… and the New Straits Times reported it all…

I must say that I am sick and tired of reading such articles… What is happening in the New Straits Times? Do the journalists and editors in that news paper have any idea what is ethics in journalism?

Normally I just ignore them but now… I feel that I have to say something…

And that is… New Straits Time, you can go to hell !!!

I make no apologies in that statement…

Public Service and Politics (1)

Sometimes I wonder, what is the purpose of politics?

Is politics a means to an end?

For example Malay nationalists (of the Biro Tata Negara type) would sing the Warisan song to remind the Malay masses to support their politics in order to secure a future for the Malays…

But this slogan looks outdated and silly now, as the goals of NEP (New Economic Policy) was not achieved. The funny thing is that these politicians use the failure to achieve NEP as evidence that the Malays need them in order to “protect” the collective interests of the Malays. In this regrad the Malays have been fooled big time since 1990 (the year when the NEP was supposed to obtain their goals). The UMNO led Barisan Nasional should have been voted out of power after that year; but lo and behold, the Malays still support them. Very strange indeed, as even after acknowledging their failure, they even failed to achieve NEP’s target even until today. And when some else told them that yes, in certain respects that goal was achieved, they even cried ‘no’. (I can’t remember but I think that was the ASLI chap who said that…).

All we know is that many politicians from the government are ‘rich’. Isn’t it strange, they are getting richer whilst even by their standards (i.e. the NEP goal, they have admittedly failed!). At this stage I would hesitate to name names, as in the current period of accusation of slander and libel, naming names (even if they are obvious, is not advisable, unless you are one of the few bloggers who are willing to endure…).

But read Malaysia’s Political Economy: Politics, Patronage and Profits by Edmund Terrence Gomez and K. S. Jomo, and you know what I mean…

Things bring the question to the issue what is the purpose of politics?

And so politics is a means to an end (or series of ends)… but what exactly?

To enable those who participate in politics to become rich….. this idea is actually embodied in the saying … in Malaysia you join politics in order to be rich… Now, I can’t say who was the first to say such a phrase but this phrase is often heard when Malaysians are discussing about politics…

Or is there something else…

There is another reason for participating in politics… and that is to provide public service….
