Antara Realita dan Mimpi Demokrasi di Malaysia

I found an interesting post by Rocky Bru… and here are some parts of it, the parts which interest me…

More than 30 years of economic patronage from the ruling Umno party, which favours the Malay majority in its distribution of resources, have given rise to a complacent middle class that has been resistant to any change that would threaten its privileged position

….

“Members of the middle class have shut out the clarion call of Reformasi. Parti Keadilan Nasional (PKN), led by Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, the wife of Datuk Seri Anwar, exposed the alleged corrupt practices of the regime in the hope of appealing to “liberal” Malays and those who valued the economic growth fostered by Umno but were alienated by the government.…. “For most of modern Malaysian history, major political changes have been the result of wheeling and dealing by the country’s elite….. “But Malaysian elites are known to be cohesive. After a bitter conflict, top politicians traditionally embrace those who have fallen from grace. “Such a quasi-democracy will likely reign for years to come in our neighbouring country”.

Rocky Bru – Poster Mail #1

This letter is important as it highlight one very crucial thing about Malaysia. There is likely a possibility that many Malaysian democracy activists are best dreaming.

As to quote from that letter:

If the writer’s thesis is correct, Hindraf, Bersih and opposition parties (and bloggers and journalists too) are just passing irritations in the wind, as far as the Malaysian government is concerned.

Wow…. to say that bloggers are just passing irritation…. I think that is similar to what I say in this entry –   2007 – Tahun Vivere Pericoloso bagi Blogger-Blogger Malaysia? . And because of this bloggers are constantly at risk.

Surely Rocky knows about this – after all he has posted this entry: Blogger Shukri Speaks Out. Hence I need not elaborate.

In this regard, bloggers are cyber dissidents. Unfortunately these cyber-dissidents are engaging in an asymmetrical conflict as the odds are against them (the bloggers).

This is the reality of the state of democracy in Malaysia. In this regard, I have to say that in the next general election the Barisan Nasional will win.

Ahhh…. I have nothing more and nothing else to say about this letter…..

Unfortunately, I sometimes feel depressed about the reality of democracy in Malaysia.

I even feel more depressed when reading this article (surat dari pembaca) from Suara Karya (an Indonesian newspaper online). Read this especially the ones that I bolded:

Belajar Demokrasi dari Indonesia!

Selasa, 26 Desember 2006

That is a letter from Alex Sudarwanto to Suara Karya Online

Demokrasi Malaysia bersifat semu (ersatz)?…

… sampai kapan pun UMNO tak akan kalah…?

Sometimes I feel, it is much better to dream about Tabu rather than to dream about democracy in Malaysia.
